-Design Process + Considerations

-How Zoning and Codes Affects Design

-"Better Design" through Sustainable Approaches

-Construction Process + How it Impacts You

-DIY Opportunities + Resources

-Interior Design

Schedule

Day One - Site + Zoning Analysis, Idea Generating

All designs start with two essential components: the property and the needs/wishes of the Owner.  On the first day, we will delve into the possibilities of your property by analyzing it through the lens of the Zoning Code.  We will also explore your individual goals, both short-term and long-term.  When we combine the two, we create a "program" that guides design possibilities.  With this in hand, we'll conceptualize some basic layouts.

Day Two - Design + Feedback

We will reconvene to see what design(s) you have generated or refined over the past week.  In an open studio setting, we will take the initial ideas from sketches to more fully-conceived 3D models that respond to your established program.  Finally, we'll bring in a contractor to review each design, providing valuable cost and construction feedback.  You'll walk away with a preliminary design with which to receive ballpark estimates and provide the foundation for a permit set.

Workshop Prerequisite

Prior to the first Saturday, please download the free 3D modelling program "SketchUp" to a laptop (or tablet with keyboard & mouse capabilities.)  Please work through these tutorials to familiarize yourself with the program.  This workshop will use SketchUp as a visual tool and will not focus on gaining proficiency with the program.
